I'm going in circles finding a link to buy one. Thanks for doing this, peace love and beats to the monomes!!

What an exciting night - kits AND an 8x16 announced. I guess the obvious question is... how hard will it be to make an 8x16 out of the kits (without doing the dual-USB/USB hub method)? If I have a fair amount of experience programming C on microcontrollers, would it be a viable hack? Or would it even require reprogramming (I assume it would if I wanted to use only 1 logic kit, but then again I'd have to get another LED driver chip right?) Sorry for doing the lame "custom/special exception" thing, but a DIY 8x16 has always been my dream.

so are the keypad kits the old 40h size buttons or the new smaller buttons?
on 06.06.2007 08:24
i'm in with one keypad kit. will you be able to ship this out prior to 14th to Washington DC ? I'm currently in US until the 14th, so i could save some time/money on the shipments. Please drop me a short mail... So far the logic kit and my experiments with it are doing quite well.

Dth'aaaa ! I've already bought the button's fattier, cheezier cousins ... the ones at "the other place" (<---- so as not to be advertising them). The backplate, pcb breakout was out of stock ... now I don't know what I'll do for that. I am counting on my local radioshack for the other menial stuff... it's been a While and I don't even know where my other iron is. Oh well! Congrats on the new business!! you deserve it! cheers, -h

the keypad kit will use the 40h keypads and grid pcb. as stated in the text at http://monome.org/40h/kit (absolutely read this if you plan on getting one) boards can be tiled in one direction for an 8x16. this would require two logic boards. if you wanted to design you own logic board to handle two 8x8 grids, go for it.

hey brian, all. what will be the modibility of this board? for instance were i so say want to add a high res rotary encoder, or a pitch-bend wheel or something of that nature would it be possible without an insane work around?
on 07.06.2007 13:12
btw i'm still gonna get one regardless ;)

the board for the 40h has 4 adc or 2 optical encoder ports built-in, and the firmware and both monome serial and monome serialXP (coming out soon!) have support for this built-in. id imagine the logic kits are identical, so it shouldnt be a problem. ive been messing around with a 40h with encoder and i must say its pretty much awsome, having a custom box with 2 encoder controls, or even better, some way of making an XY or joystick controller connected to the encoder inputs would simply be amazing! and, as brian said, both adc and optical-based controls take almost no extra power, so one USB cable is still ok.
on 07.06.2007 15:33
you raised an important point here, which is that the thru40h logic board (the kit) is functionally identical to the original 40h board. code will execute precisely the same, and the same options are on board.

I'm going away for a few days (Vegas!), looks like the release might happen while I'm gone and I might miss out. Do I cancel the trip or spend my time in Vegas hitting the refresh button in a cafe?
on 07.06.2007 21:59
i kinda doubt it will go that fast... also, im thinking Brian would be willing to hold one for you anyways!
on 07.06.2007 23:10
i'm going to push the pre-order back one week, don't worry. boards should be here last week of june, we don't want to hold people's money for that long.
on 08.06.2007 02:33
That makes me happy and sad. If you need help holding or counting peoples' money I'm there for you bro, no problem. /joking about the money, I hope it will pay of a trip to the makerfaire, future prototypes and your free time, thanks for your work.

where will i have to ship to and when?
on 10.06.2007 19:16
pre-orders at the end of next week. 15th or so. shipping at the end of the month, when the parts get here.

i am toying with the idea of making one half of my upcoming 2 x 40h green, and the other red. i am looking forward for the kits to become available. i have one original logic board already, so i will get another one, plus two kits for the keys. i had to sell my original 40h to afford the parts, but at least now i will have the satisfaction of assembling my very own custom 80h :-)

posted a side-photo of the logic board, for those eager to plan enclosure designs. also posted dimensions. http://monome.org/40h/kit

almost! i'm waiting for the last couple 40h/se payments to go through, as i have to swap out the old order system for the new kit order system on the server. holding off until then will save me a lot of time. if not tonight, tomorrow. and honestly, this is for pre-orders, these kits won't ship for about two weeks since the parts aren't even here yet. i'll post when it's ready. thanks for the patience!
