first i'd like to thank monome for the quick delivery. i got mine on friday but have been very busy and unable to play with it until now. so i'm very excited. but i can't quite figure out what i'm doing wrong w/ the setup. i downloaded the ftdi, max/mxp runtime 4.6, serialio and monomeserial, and the base patches. i've restarted the computer twice. first i open serialio or monomeserial (i've only had any success with serialio) and then run _40h_serial.mxb. twice i've been able to run _40h_test.mxb and _40h_midi.mxb and get it to recognize button presses (and play the notes in the midi). beyond that, i haven't been able to get anything to work. if i run 64step or mlr and drop a song in, it will show up in the dropdown menu, but i can't see any wavelengths or manipulate the file. there's probably something really simple that i'm missing, but i can't figure it out. i have a fair amount of programming and computer experience, but this is my first endeavor into this sort of realm, and i'm just too damn excited to use this that i had to enlist some help. if i run serialio, the terminal prints up to these lines: serialio listening for incoming osc messages on port 8080 serialio broadcasting osc messages to localhost:8000 serialio searching for devices... Serial device matched: /dev/tty.usbserial-m40h0358. i don't know if there's supposed to be more. if i try to load a song into 64step, i get this: • error: sfinfo~: can't find file Macintosh if i try to run life on processing,

not sure if you tried this, but, in MonomeSerial, make sure you select Open Sound Control instead of MIDI from the top drop-down menu. then, make sure you change the 'prefix' parameter to read '/box' instead of '/40h' otherwise, you will not get the 40h to communicate through monomeSerial to mlr or 64step or many other older apps.
on 03.05.2007 20:23
when you run serialio or monomeserial, you don't need to run _40h_serial.mxb. all three of those do the same thing. kevin is correct, about changing /40h to /box in monomeserial. we're in the middle of migrating some communication schemes, i'm sorry it's confusing. the problem with 64step seems to be with file path perhaps? try loading a short-ish aif or wav. to get mlr running: 1. start serialio 2. run _mlr.mxb 3. hit the "dac" button on the bottom left, take a look at the help steps for the rest. let me know if this helps.

it was the /box that was getting me. but huzzah, it works! thank you both. i've been able to mess around a bit with 64step, which is fantastic. i think it was the file path. haven't had time for mlr yet, but that is soon. i did try to run life again though, and got the same error. i guess that part didn't make it on my last post. it says it can't find oscP5. any ideas? thanks a lot...i'm already in love with my 40h. wow.
on 04.05.2007 15:30
ah yes. processing version of life requires oscP5, the osc lib for processing. check the resources section of the processing site. the chuck version of life is actually much easier to use, and has sound.

(this is a re-post since it all disapeared...) Hello I have the Monome and I have OSX 10.3.9 I use the Free runtime application 4.6.3. When I try to run any of the Max patches listed under(and more) it all crashes: app (max/msp) mlr ? live sample cutting app (max/msp) 64step ? versatile step sequencer app (max/msp) flip ? visual multi-file reslicer app (max/msp) balron_40h ? tonal mapping app (max/msp) muon ? emergent feedback sequencer ------ I am able to run the 40h_base_2.4 patches, (test patches),chuck and some other pathes, so the unit works, ------ ...so I installed the full trial version of max. When I tried to open anything with this one, it all crashed, even the test programs. When I opened the test program with runtime it works. It crashes with the other ones, so that is the same as before. ---- I would be very happy if anybody could help. I have posted on Cycling 74, but nobody answers. Thank you arne (I could post the crash report if anyone wants to see it...)

maybe try cycling74 support (e-mail?) what's your hardware setup?
on 30.07.2007 17:05
Ok I will look into the email support.. I have a 1,5 GHz PowerPC G4 with 1,5 GB ram. thank you arne

So this the the reply i got from Cycling 74: Hello, Please refrain from cross-posting the same email to both the forums and support. We do read both. In this case, you may need to contact the author of these patches for further info. We don't support third-party software. Best, Andrew B.

Well that blows. What happens when you open up max/msp without opening up any particular patch (just opening the program)?
on 30.07.2007 20:56
Hi It crashes when doing that as well. arne
on 31.07.2007 00:10
open a cycling74 patch (like something from the help or tutorials) and when it crashes, ask them.
on 31.07.2007 04:54
i agree. the post over does make it seem like the problem lies with monome, even though that isnt the case.
on 31.07.2007 20:02
hello Now I have posted on the max/msp forum that it crashes with their own patches as well. Lets see what happens next... a

Here is my new answer from Cycling´74: Sounds like you might be experiencing a problem which occured around 10.3.9 (if i remember correctly!). The issue is with the PACE protection (max msp copy protection), which was affected by the OSX system upgrade installed using software update. AFAIK, there are 2 solutions: 1. search the forum for the prebind_script.dmg // or download it from here http://www.paceap.com/prebind_script.dmg 2. download the apple osx 10.3.9 COMBO installer and re-install the OS. hope this helps, j --Prebind did not happened because it found everything to be ok. --Anybody had any problems reinstalling osx 10.3.9. Will I loose stuff on my machine and will I have to reinstall programs afterwards? Thank You arne

i dont know about Apple, but i imagine its similar to windows. in win, you can try to repair the OS, but ive always had to do a fresh install, and that means a harddisc format (lose everything). i HAVE installed Windows over an old install, due to my inexperienmce years ago and a problem with the Dell bios not letting you boot from disc, and all it did was waste HD space since the old install was still taking up room on the disc. regardless, it is always recommended that you backup when doing any sort of OS installation/repair. if you dont have an external (USB2 or FireWire) HardDrive, i highly recommend you get one, its always good to be safe. if not, you can use CDs/DVDs + Flash storage. of course, upgrading your OS is also an option, especially since im almost positive MonomeSerial doesnt work on 10.3.9 (and im almost positive the new devices and even new patches will require monome serial). but, this will probably require backing up as well. maybe im wrong here about OSX, as i said im on Windows, but im pretty sure its not that much differant.

i'm pretty sure mac os will let you reinstall an operating system without formatting so long as the system you are installing is a newer version than the system that is already on the machine. in the case of 10.3.9, this means you would have to upgrade to Tiger. I know dashboard and spotlight make things a bit slow, but your computer can definitely handle tiger without a problem it's pretty shitty that Tiger still costs $129, since Leopard will be out before the end of the year. fwiw, i would not suggest buying leopard as soon as it comes out instead, as max/msp probably won't work with it for at least a month. your best bet is finding a friend with a tiger install disc or someone with a similar laptop that got theirs after Tiger came out so you can use the discs that came with their computer.

Thank you all! I will see what to do. Guess I´ll just try to work my way around with chuck and Ableton Live for now. arne
