I feel a little silly jumping in here and expressing interest in purchasing someone's unloved (or simply underutilised) 40h, when there's already demand far outstretching the number of likely available units for any foreseeable future. And of course what I really should be doing is making an effort to set aside the time and energy necessary to tinker and attempt to put together my own (forthcoming kit or no) and presumably learn a whole lot along the way. Any word on the price of the Tenori-On? IMO slightly different markets, the Tenori-On looks like an AV toy, poke at it, get happy accidents. The 40h is a open source making it more attractive to hobbyist hackers. Form vs. function, I think I'd get more use from a 40h. Both devices are based on similar ideas, maybe together they'll help form user groups of blinky audio gadgets. Monome imitators will just be in for headaches, the monome peeps have paid their dues in tooling up and figuring out how to crank out hundreds of these at a time, it's not as easy as getting 1 working box, you have to get ALL or nearly all the kinks out. They also have a price point that's tough to beat, my guess is that each 40h costs about $375-$400 to make, plus labor and overhead BS. They're not going Mercedes shopping anytime soon, at least not on the 40h proceeds. The touch screen stuff is muuuuch more expensive and you're moving away from bus powered handheld stuff. Interesting time for toys right now, very cool.
