So basically my laptop died mid set the other night :-S forcing me to
invest in a new one and as it happens all new laptops made after a
certain time have windows vista on them.

I was just wondering if anyone knows whether the existing ftdi driver
for xp will work for vista? i don't see why not but i'd rather not buy a
new laptop with vista if the 40h won't work on it

Danke

Any reason why you can't re-install xp?

hopefully you've done your research on the vista DRM 'features', and
changes to the audio/video architecture? are you certain, as a musician,
if vista is the right choice?

ftdi would be the people to check with. if the driver works, the 40h
will be fine.

Funnily enough i've done absolutely no research on this :-S
Basically my laptop display has gone on the blink and it reduced the
brightness and contrast to slim to none, this is definitely not easy to
fix. I've reinstalled windows but the display is still sketchy...

i've managed to get a laptop with 1gig of ram but alas installed with
vista.

The ftdi driver installed no problem and the 40h is recognized :-D

The only problem i have now (and this happened on my friends XP laptop
too) is that as soon as you open 40H_serial, msp grinds to a halt. It
still registers the button presses but a few seconds later.

Thanks for the all help!

Okay just realised i missed one of the steps on installing out...

:-S

works like a charm so far, haven't had a chance to test it much yet but
vista runs it no problem.

I successfully set up my monome on XP 64-bit yesterday, which should be
similar to Vista in terms of issues. I forget if I used the regular
FTDI driver or found a 64-bit version on their site. Also, you'll need
to use the 64-bit version of the .NET runtime stuff (needed for Serial
XP). Some genius at Microsoft decided to deprecate 16-bit apps, so they
just won't run under 64-bit (32-bit apps are fine), which should be ok
since few apps are still 16-bit. BUT, a lot of INSTALLERS are still
16-bit, so I keep running into 32-bit apps with 16-bit installers and
I'm SOL on those. So I'm going to have to set the machine up as
dual-boot just to install certain apps. Argh. Not sure if they did the
same thing with Vista?

thats a b1tch, the 16-bit problems.

did the new serialXP install ok? i used Inno setup installer app, which
is a really cool program for making windows installers via a Scripting
engine. id imagine it would make the installer as a win32 app, but im
not positive.

interesting article:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39087

not exactly objective, but still interesting that Dell are switching
back to XP. im glad i have an XP disc, that is for sure, as when i get
a new laptop and it probably has Vista on it, ill have the option
(although im going to try to use Vista at first, but im not expecting to
end up keeping it).

just got a new laptop. orginally, i installed my old copy of XP again
because my main soundcard has no drivers yet on vista, but that didnt
work (need a new reg key for XP), so i bit the bullet and restored
Vista. my other soundcard does have drivers (FastTrack USB), so im
happy. also, my serialXP and Reaktor work (serialXP looks freaking
awsome with the new Aero graphics!). finally, my computer came with
microsoft office, so that alone is a good enough reason for me to try
sticking with Vista awhile. ill report back here with any good or bad
news...

hey MrLee... if you are still reading this - how is Vista running for
you with max/msp patches? max opens and works fine for me (can build
patches and whatnot), but it wont open mlr 2.21 or 2.3 for some reason.
just checking if this is just happening for me, or other vista users...

i had the same problem with it not opening mlr, and not it works fine.
did you install the updated externals?

actually, now they are up to 4.6.3, so if you download that you dont
need the updated externals...

4.6.3! i've been waiting for this day. i should get on their mailing
list. this should simplify our super-convoluted installation process.

anyone have any new bugs?

I can run mlr 2.21, although it does occasionally slow down for some
reason... don't know why this is happening on a laptop with a gig of ram
but never happened on xp with probably half the ram
