This probably seems like a dumb question, but I'm a little anxious about
taking my monome 40h (http://forum.monome.org/topic/1283) out to Jersey
with me. I don't really want to mail it to myself because that would be
7 days I wouldn't get to play with it. I'm not sure I want to put it in
my checked luggage either, because airport security has fucked with my
luggage before and I don't want them to take/break it. If I do take it
on the plane, should I completely dissassemble it first? A tupperware
with a grid of blinking lights doesn't seem to me like the kind of thing
they are going to ignore going through security.

Any advice/past experiences?

Whoa, yeah. They're gonna take one look at that and probably arrest you
immediately. Or you're at least going to have to spend 3 hours
explaining it to the dumbass TSA guys while they give you a body cavity
search.

Sounds like checking it with your baggage may be the only option,
unfortunately.

Killer idea with the tupperware, though.

you'll be fine. carry it on, don't check it. you can reason with people
in person-- but not if you're not there.

i haven't had experience with a tupperware enclosure, but i've never
been asked about my 40h by security. it's the people in the terminal
that freak out when they see it. =P

sunglasses and gloves you're wearing.

I flew from LA->SF->Chicago-LA with no questions about the Monome. I
thought they would be a bit freaked out by my hacked-up optical mouse,
but no worries with that either. Just don't try to bring any liquids
with you cause those are dangerous :)

i took 20 units on a plane once, they open stuff, look at it, then tell
you to move on.

my laptop case triggered the chemical test. they didn't care about my
hacked up electronics, but really wanted to get inside my totally
innocuous case.

alfred (daedelus), on the other hand with that old 16x16 prototype, i'm
sure has some stories.

i'm partially nervous because i'm taking a redeye. last time i took a
redeye flight LAX->EWR i was one of only 4 people going through
security, and they gave me a hard time about my M-Audio Firewire 410. i
think it was probably just because they were bored, or maybe the guy was
just interested in audio interfaces. I think i'm going to definitely
take my Tupperbot aboard with me, at least if they fuck with me it will
make a good story. i can't imagine what daedelus goes through to tour
with that thing.

I've carried a cracklebox (http://crackle.org/CrackleBox.htm) onto a
plane several times in my carry-on bag with absolutely no problems. I
wouldn't worry about a monome, which looks much more respectable.

I'm actually a student at Princeton. The music department here is
crazy, I'm going to try to get into PLOrk next spring. It would be so
cool to learn Chuck from the guys who wrote it.
